What is the best way to leave my job?
We are a small company and the reason I am leaving is that the CEO and President are not professional, they make emotionally based decisions, they fight like a married couple in meetings (even in front of myself or the financial controller). On top of that, the president comes in late everyday, takes 6-8 smoke breaks and a full lunch everyday, blames everyone else when she misses her deadlines and refuses to work at all from home. We all understand that we need to put in extra hours to make this business work and she claims she does work, but it is very obvious she doesn’t. I put in a good 50 - 60 hour week every week, if not more, plus my Blackberry never stops. I have no problem with extra hours, but then I am not sure why I get comments from the CEO that I need to balance home and work better, and prepare at home better. The President is the CEO’s daughter.
The issue for me is I feel loyal to them and to the business and feel like I am dropping my responsibilities to some of the great relationships I have made over the years with some amazing customers.
They (President and CEO) will take me leaving personal, and they will make it personal. I have no interest in going into a WAR as an exit interview with the leaders of a company I have been with for so long. If I had my choice, I would just drop my keys off and email them saying I am not coming back.
Half of me wants to leave in a professional manner, but half of me wants to call all the bullshit and write a nice detailed resignation letter stating exactly why I am leaving. I expect the bridge to be burned regardless, which is sad, so what is the best way to leave this company? Any tips on how or when to tell my boss? -Aaron
Hi Aaron.
I’m assuming you have another job lined up already, yes? If not, I’d probably question if leaving is the best thing right now, especially given the economy.
I think you can share your real feelings during your exit interview. However, the diplomatic way to do so would be to keep the focus on you and not “them.” What do I mean? I mean talk about what was challenging for you; what was difficult for you; and what you learned about yourself the last year or two…instead of blaming or criticizing the CEO and President. This way you still get to say what you wanted to say but in a constructive way.
Lastly, I think it is a good rule of thumb to never leave a job on a bad note. Truth be told, the time to provide feedback was while you were still employed, not while you are headed out the door. The “hit and run” feedback method is not very fair and it will guarantee bad feelings for years to come.
